The video “A chaque moine son habit” by Raphaëlle de Groot, was conceived as a study of art applied to life. In this study, the artist wanted to experiment with the notion of habit, and all that it evokes, within her family.

The video “A chaque moine son habit”, by Raphaëlle de Groot, was conceived as a study of art applied to life.
In this study, the artist wanted to experiment with the notion of habit, and all that it evokes, within her family.
These intimate images of sewing moments shared by the fire bring together the skin and its clothes, offering a tender and sensual look at the respective traces of clothes. In attempting to reconcile individualisation and community, timeless gestures and contemporary life, the artist proposes this patching exercise as a metaphor for a social fabric in search of renewal.
Suggesting spring as a moment of departure towards a more essential conception of those objects that envelop us in our daily lives, she invites us to reconsider the inexhaustible potential that lies in this creative membrane.
Raphaëlle de Groot, a Canadian artist based in Italy, tells through her art the story of what presents itself. Inspired by encounters, human and more than human, she commits herself in her practice to be present. Whether this means being physically present in a place for a long time, engaging with a community or investing herself with a mental presence in an exchange to really listen.
In this way her work develops in reciprocity with its surroundings, adopting very different forms, “a bit like a choir, where each voice, however small, contributes to a great symphony”.
Like this living practice, many of her projects are developed in cycles, going through different stages of creation and presentation.
